Many details will vary between delivery service providers. The prices typically vary dramatically between two seemingly identical proposals.
Every Owner, boat, and passage are different in some respects. For that reason, the more information you share about your plan, schedule, and boat, the better I can tailor fair pricing for you.
In plainspeak, and rather loosely, here’s how you’d be billed for a delivery:
· All boat expenses (fuel, water, permits, port fees, dockage, repairs, etc.)
· Travel costs & expenses for Captain & Crew
· a Daily Rate for the Captain & Crew
· a Per Diem for Provisions.
The Estimated Price that I’ll give you also depends on the size/type/condition of the vessel, total number of crew required, intended area of passage, and some other stuff both practical and esoteric.
Some companies offer a “flat-rate” price covering all of the above, but it rarely pays off for the Owner. The prices are inflated, and often many crew are inexperienced, unpaid volunteers -- a dangerous way to reduce costs and hedge against the unknowns.
Whether Flat-Rate or Daily-Rate, ask these questions (and more) when evaluating different proposals:
· Is the Crew professional and credentialed?
· Will there be amateur/volunteer Crew?
· What are the estimated travel costs?
· Where will the crew start and end travel – is round-trip travel required or just one way?
· Do you add a markup to the boat expenses?
· How many days of inspection/preparation will I be billed for?
· What happens if the trip is delayed by weather, or mechanical issues?
· Is there a provision to terminate the agreement if delays are/will be excessive?
· Are provisioning costs included in the price?
· What type of deposit is needed and when is it due?
· Are you able to troubleshoot and make repairs if troubles arise offshore?
· and so on….
Once we’ve decided to work together, and after some paperwork goes back and forth, you’ll be asked to make a deposit before I block out time on the calendar and guarantee crew commitments. During this period before mobilization I’ll be pre-arranging and planning as much as possible, and obsessing about weather, of course. An additional deposit will be required later before we begin travel, and anticipated boat expenses are advanced or available when we arrive.
You’ll be billed a Daily Rate for Captain & Crew, plus travel costs, and a per diem for provisions. You’ll also be responsible for all boat expenses such as fuel, water, permits, port fees, dockage, repairs, insurance, customs fees, taxes, and so forth.
The crew and I receive travel pay at 50% of the Daily Rate for travel less than 1500 miles. I strive to use Crew located near the point of embarkation or planned arrival to keep costs down, and to reduce the need for round-trip travel. Often driving to or from the boat is a good option for distances less than about 450 miles.
The full Daily Rate is charged for each calendar day underway, and ideally there will be no stops planned or needed. For delays exceeding 48hrs due to foul weather, boat repairs/failures, and similar causes, a Standby Rate of 50% will be billed. We can end the agreement with 3 days notice if the delays promise to be extraordinarily long.
The per diem is billed from the day travel starts until crew returns to point of origin, regardless of status (travel, underway, standby, 48hr delay).
At the end of the voyage, after she’s washed down and you’ve inspected her, we debrief about any performance issues, review the billing, and square up.
